For the second time this year Garden Room served dinner without trays. Members of EnACT, the College's environmental action student group were present to facilitate the event while also selling t-shirts and booklets to raise money. When asked about the pros and cons of going tray-less the members EnAct said that they do not see many cons among the overwhelming amount of positive effects.
The College has recently been acknowledged for receiving top scores for "Supportive Campus Environment" in the 2008 National Survey of Student Engagement. This survey is a national assessment that measures student-faculty relationships and their interactions with one another, how supportive the campus environment is as a whole, how inspiring the learning experience is for the student, the level of scholastic challenge, and how dynamic and collaborative the learning is overall.
After more than two weeks of near silence on the economy, President-elect Barack Obama's transition team demanded swift passage by Congress of a massive two-year spending and tax-cutting recovery program. The program urges Congress to pass jobs, an implement a tax-cut proposal by Jan.
A Wal-Mart employee was trampled to death on Friday when out-of-control shoppers desperate for bargains broke down the doors at a 5 a.m. sale. Other workers were also trampled as they tried to rescue the man. Police and witnesses said that customers shouted angrily and kept shopping when store officials said they were closing because of the death.
Dr. Aaron Passell is a new Sociology professor on campus this year. Currently, he teaches Introduction to Sociology, a seminar on Social Movements, and Research Methods I for Sociology and Anthropology majors. Next semester, He will be teaching Introduction to Sociology, Environmental Sociology, and Urban and Suburban Sociology.
Dr. Mark Holowchak is new to the College this semester as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy. He is currently teaching two sections of Individuals and Society and a section of Political Philosophy. Next semester, he will offer Individuals and Society again in addition to Environmental Philosophy, Critical Thinking, and Business Ethics.
Although the twin challenges of a contracting market and a declining economy are weighing on collegiate admissions operations this fall, interest in Muhlenberg remains strong. Applications for fall 2009 are running close to last year's record pace, and Early Decision application volume also has remained very close to last year's totals.
During its October meeting the College's board welcomed five new Trustees (Eric Berg '78, Barbara Crossette '63, Julie Hamre '72, Jack Ladley '70, and NE Pennsylvania Synod Bishop Sam Zeiser) and seven new members of the Board of Observers (Jerry Galgano '80, Bob Goodliffe '84, Nancy Hoffman P'10, Melissa Morrow Legouri '02, Jill Roberts-Lewis P'09, the Reverend Eric Shafer '72, and Taras Zawarski '76), as well as new Development and Alumni Relations Vice President Connie Harris.
Two important members of our campus community have been honored by the greater Lehigh Valley community recently. Adrian Shanker '09 was recognized at its annual banquet by the Allentown Human Relations Commission on October 14th for his work on behalf of the gay and transgendered community, and Assistant Vice President for Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations Deb Kipp is being honored by the Eastern Pennsylvania chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals as Fundraising Executive of the Year on November 12th, which is National Philanthropy Day.
