Fri., Apr. 17 was what many students would call a perfect day on the College campus. First off, as a Friday, it marked the end of another stressful week of end-of-semester class work, and the sunny, 70 degree weather inspired many students to spend the day outdoors.
The Alpha Iota chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega National Fraternity was established in 1881 making it among the earliest Greek organizations at the College. The Alpha Iota chapter was in continuous operation from 1881 through 2000, when a series of violations of College policy led to the loss of recognition.
The former Tau Kappa Epsilon house will undergo extensive renovations. According to David Rabold, Capital Projects Manager at the College, the renovations will most likely start sometime next year and will take approximately one year to complete. The space is designed to be used by Theater, Dance, and Music departments because the departments are out of space and as they continue to grow, the College wants to support them.
On Fri., Apr. 3 Senator Arlen Specter (R - Pennsylvania) hosted a town hall meeting at Muhlenberg on the heels of launching his reelection campaign bid. Students, Allentown residents, and workers union representatives were among the nearly 125 people who attended the event.
On April 16, 2009 the literary minds of Muhlenberg College migrated to the A level of the library for a reading from Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Stephen Dunn. Dunn received a BA in history and English from Hofstra University, attended writing workshops at the New School in New York City, and completed an MA in Creative Writing at Syracuse University.
Menachem Sholowicz and Anshel Sieradzki stood in line together in Auschwitz, as terrified teenagers 65 years ago, having serial numbers tattooed on their arms. Sholowicz was B-14594; Sieradzki was B-14595. Both were Polish Jews who had never met or spoke and after standing in that line, they were quickly separated yet their stories are strikingly similar.
Works Progress Administration projects from then 1930's, Depression-Era America can be found all over the country. Bethpage State Park, the golf course that is going to be host of the United States Open in June and the old Jersey City Medical center, now an apartment complex in Jersey City that provides a striking view of lower Manhattan are both legacies of government efforts to create jobs and public works projects during the Great Depression.
During the afternoon of Tues., Apr. 21 there was a fire at 441 North 23rd Street, an off-campus, non-student residence. However, it is located in close proximity to student residences and the Liberty Street Tavern. The Department of Campus Safety and the Allentown Fire Department arrived on the scene within minutes and quickly had the fire under control.
