The closest that many students have gotten to the opera Carmen is through MTV's modern rendition of the show (remember that 2001 re-make with Beyonce in her Destiny's Child days?) But earlier this month, twenty students got a chance to travel to the Metropolitan Opera House to see world-famous opera - and we're not talking MTV's Carmen: A Hip Hopera.
Twenty 'Berg Organization of Music (BOOM) members traveled to New York City on the evening of Feb. 13 to watch Carmen, George Bizet's famous story of an enticing gypsy and her romance with a soldier.
The trip to the Metropolitan is just one of the many activities that BOOM members have participated in since the club's formation several years ago.
The organization, supervised by Dr. Ted A. Conner, was formed to draw together musicians and non-musicians who share an interest in music. BOOM members also assist at musical events such as the Muhlenberg Piano series and A Capella Fest.
In the past year, BOOM members have traveled to local concerts as well as the Kimmel Center to hear the Philadelphia Orchestra.
"The trip to the Metropolitan Opera was a huge success. We were lucky enough to take a limo bus directly to the Met and watch an incredible performance of Carmen," said Janelle Garipoli, BOOM president. "The show included numerous live animals - we are talking donkeys, horses, and dogs - and of course, amazing singing," added Garipoli.
Carmen first premiered in Paris in 1875 and has grown to become one of the most widely performed shows in America. The Metropolitan performance, starring Russian mezzo-soprano, Olga Borodina, and directed by Emmanuel Villaume, allowed 'Berg students to get a taste of world-famous opera at a student-friendly price.
"I thought that the show was amazing," said Ariella Goldstein, MTA Liaison for BOOM. "If given the chance, I would love to see it again."
