On Nov. 9, the College's Communication Club presented a student panel about internships in the Communication field.
The presenters were six students in the Media and Communication major who currently are or were interns. They spoke about their experiences and offered insight and advice about how to apply for and obtain an internship.
The panelists included Lisa Siciliano '10, an intern at MTV, Catherine Schwartz '11, an intern at a celebrity publicity agency, Ethan Feinstein '11, an intern at a public relations firm, Rachel Albert '11, an intern at Uno's Restaurants, Alyssa Scaglione '10, an intern at NBC Sports and NY1 Sports and Cathie-Marie Roca '11, an intern at a public relations firm.
Each of the panelists shared their experiences with the process of applying and interviewing for the internships. The overlaying theme through all of the panelists was that being persistent throughout the application project will pay off in the end.
Ethan Feinstein, a public relations intern who worked on a green initiative campaign, said, "One of the most important parts of the process is to follow up. I must have called the Human Resources woman a million times, and it paid off. She knew who I was when I got there and it really helped me in the end."
Another panelist agreed saying "Persistence is key, companies want interns that aren't afraid to go after what they really want and who know the steps to get there."
Other advice that the panelists gave is to keep contact with your supervisors because they will most likely want to help you in the future and networking is key.
The experiences the students shared about their internships were very exciting.
Alyssa Scaglione, a television sports broadcasting intern with NBC Sports and NY1 sports, told the students in attendance about a time she had to interview the New York Mets' third basemen, David Wright and the numerous times she found herself in the New York Yankees dugout for her internship.
